Going to Europe
Yattaaaa....finally Europe touched down! seem it is exaggerated :D
Go to europe wasn't so easy for me. if i'm not a Japanese student like right now, it's nearly impossible i can afford the ticket that 8times from my monthly salary as a government employee in Indonesia ^-^
Last march i was join the International symposium for PhD student in Technische Universitat Graz, Austria. It was really amazing experience, first time went europe, even my scholarship hadn't transferred since December, challenge me so much. Ya, the visa to Europe not an easy things to handle, even I had invitation letter from TU Graz, it needs some extra money to proof that i'm not going become a vagrant, knocking around Austria :).
Really surprising me, I got approval for visa application only 1day, since my friend in my univ, previously apply the same visa, had to back and forth to embassy nearly 3 times in Tokyo. Though visa application is free, but to go to Tokyo from Kitakyushu, a small town where i live now, really take some cost.
I prepare my trip very carefully, since my univ just pay for symposium entry and my sensei so kind give me extra 5man for my trip, fffhhh... total 8man i got, nearly 800USD really help to reduce other cost.
Ticket Tokyo-Vienna round trip cost nearly 1200USD, still have extra cost from Kitakyushu to Tokyo, and
Vienna to Graz. It was Kitakyushu-Fukuoka-Tokyo-Dubai-Vienna-Graz, what a really really looong trip.
Transit in Dubai nearly 10hours, give me more thrilled experience.(the complete story in Dubai will be another episode, hehe...)
My flight start from Kitakyushu at 9.00am on March 20th and arrive at Graz at 9.am on March 21nd,
hahaha....so crazy tooks 24hours officially, but since Graz is in central european time as UTC +01:00, so actually my total trip in exact time is 33hours!!!
And other craziness i had to face in the first day of the symposium was the jetleg and i had to hold it until another 13hours _ _'! The program finish at 10pm, gave me an extraordinary tired and brainless as well :D
But, an amazing lecture during the symposium gave me power to stay awake.
Never thought that i'm going to meet them directly and even had a lunch and deep discussion during the symposium. O..ya, since the participants it self actually only 6 PhD students and 3 PhD as a young researchers, so it was looks like a special class for us :D
And these the lecture who gave us a full lesson from 21st -22nd March, they were :
1. Nirmal KISHNANI, he is a Senior Lecturer at NUS, Singapore and also Editor in Chief, FuturArc journal
2. Heng Chye KIANG, he is a Professor at Department of Architecture in NUS
3. Pascal BERGER, he is a founding partner of PLAYZE Switzerland and China and also teaching at Hongkong University
4. Brian CODY, he is a Professor with special field in technical science especially in building and energy
5. Stefan KRUMMECK, he is design principal of TFP Farrells Hong Kong office. His design include Beijing South Station (2003-2008), Kingkey Finance Center (it is Shenzhen's tallest tower as well as one of the world's tallest mixed use buildings when completed in 2010)
6. Stefan BECK, he is managing partner and technical director for Baumschlager Eberle. (he also gave me a DDC software that can used for building assessment)
7. Stefan HOLST, he is a Director of TRANSSOLAR KLIMA Engineering (never thought that im goin to see him, since i just know his software from internet, and now seeing the director!)
8. Ada FUNG, she is Deputy Director of Housing of HK housing authority also she is a lecturer in HK University. (so lucky to met her! learn a lot about affordable house, which in HK now is already integrated as a BIM which under her supervision. she is well known for vertical housing in HK)
9. Christian DERIX, he is a director of computational design and research group for AEDAS architec, which he founded in 2004 in London, UK. (we call him a freak digital boy, since he gave us a lecture about integrated city and all controlled digitally, quite frightening for me, what i've done in my research manually step by step, he can control it all in the same time just in his finger _ _'') ya...somehow AEDAS is completely amazing architect firm, and it is no.5 the largest architecture firms in the world after Nikken Sekkei :)
10. Gary Chang, founded EDGE in 1994, his creation of small apartment which a transformation of his 32m2 apartment and uploaded in Youtube latter was a sensation and an inspiration to millions.
On the last day, all the PhD students had to present their paper, and me....had the first turn!
Even i did the presentation many times, in my class (i'm a lecturer for 6years, so speaking in front of audience wasn't new experience) and i often gave my project presentation in front of government officer also did my international conference couple times, but....this presentation, really gave me stomachache and nervous so badly. Of course, only 8 peoples present the paper and meanwhile all the lecturers were more than 10 peoples (and also with their incredible reputation) watching us and gave so many questions, not just a question actually, critique also _ _!
For me, it looks like my own colloquium, so lucky having their comment and input, indeed. Some of presenters even had involved in debates and arguments, what a really hot discussions :D
Ya, somehow it was really amazing experience for me to met an incredible people in the world, not just their achievement, their spirit but also their manner, none of them behave like an important and principal person, they were so friendly, share their knowledge and experience during class, lunch and dinner. 3days spent my time together with them make me realize, that a big person is built by character, hard work and appreciate to other. Their achievement is the bonus of their personal behavior, which every step with consistency and perceive deeply of their work. IT IS A BIG LESSON, EVER!
